Oh the disharmony! Much like Harlan County there are no neutrals here. It is your solemn responsibility to decide which cover song prevails. In other words … Which Side Are You On?!!?

“In ancient times cats were worshipped as gods; they have not forgotten this.” Author Terry Pratchett as quoted in the Montreal Gazette
All three covers are good and better than the original. (I know, blasphemy.) But the Dead Kennedys’ version has been one of my favorites since it was release on the Fresh Fruit for Rotting Vegetables album back in ’80. Viva Jello.
The Dead Kennedys version is funny but I find the vocals to be a little annoying at times. Springsteen’s version sounds like he could have written and produced the song himself, which obviously is a very good thing. The Swing Cats’ surf rendition is enjoyable especially with resident Elvis admirer, Johnny Ramone, on guitar. Apparently, Johnny was a big fan of Elvis (and was very good friends with Lisa Marie). He had a room in his house solely dedicated to the King. Posters, rugs, lamps and all kinds of other Elvis memorabilia. Who knew? There are some nice pictures of Johnny proudly relaxing in the Elvis room of his house.
Despite Johnny’s infatuation with Elvis kitsch I have to go with The Boss.
Springsteen in a close one over Dead Kennedys. Also, I’m playing in protest today over Cuspid’s comments.
