Rachel Unthank & The Winterset:
Paul Weller:
Oh the disharmony! Much like Harlan County there are no neutrals here. Only one cover tune will live to play another day and it is your solemn responsibility to decide which one prevails. So tell me … Which Side Are You On?!!?
Also, keep in mind that if you should spontaneously self-actualize while playing a cover then you could – and probably should – nominate it for Top 10 (i.e. “Impeccable”) consideration.

Not surprisingly Weller does an excellent acoustic rendition but I’ve gotta go with Rachel & the gang. This line-up just might lure me back to church! I discovered this cut on a tribute disc from Mojo magazine (The White Album Recovered). The production and sound seems to be much better on the cd but the video of the song is great; reminds me of The Commitments. I’ll put the cd cut up later. I don’t know maybe it’s the same recording but the cd version seems to sound better to me.
I also voted for Rachel & co. I hadn’t heard of her until about a year ago when I stumbled upon a YouTube clip of her performing a British folk song (“Fareweel Regality”).
had to go with Rachel, liked the spareness of it and the fiddle….
