Fountains of Wayne vs. Dar Williams

Fountains of Wayne:

Simply terrific!

Dar Williams:

Another excellent version! This song seems to bring the best out of a musician.

Oh the disharmony! Much like Harlan County there are no neutrals here. Only one cover tune will live to play another day and it is your solemn responsibility to decide which one prevails. So tell me … Which Side Are You On?!!?

Also, keep in mind that if you should spontaneously self-actualize while playing a cover then you could – and probably should – nominate it for Top 10 (i.e. “Impeccable”) consideration.

    Love the Kinks, thanks!

Has Fountains of Wayne:ever made a song that wasn’t good? If so, I’ve never heard it. These guys are naturals. If not for better marketing and a video with naked women these guys would have been huge.

I love this song and both covers are fantastic. I hate to see either eliminated. But I’ve got to go with FOW. It’s one of my favorite covers. There’s not exactly a lot of creativity to it but the delivery, pace, vocals, guitar, damn, EVERTHING is perfect. I think I even like FOW’s version more than The Kinks’ original masterpiece, which I’m well aware is downright sacrilegious! Sorry Dar, you and your band mates were truly excellent but you ran into an invincible foe on this one.

  4. Arnie Plotnick says:

As y’all know, The Kinks are my fave band ever. This song comes toward the end of their career, where the quality of their output was really erratic and iffy. This song, though, is top notch and stands up against any of their earlier songs. Both versions are truly great. It’s really a coin toss. I’m givin’ it to Dar.

  5. Pete Black says:

Great song. Both covers win. FOW sounded like members of They Might Be Giants and Weezer joined forces to work very hook to it’s fullest. The Kinks original sounded unfulfilled after these covers.
