The Shamen:
Oh the disharmony! Much like Harlan County there are no neutrals here. Only one cover tune will live to play another day and it is your solemn responsibility to decide which one prevails. So tell me … Which Side Are You On?!!?
Also, keep in mind that if you should spontaneously self-actualize while playing a cover then you could – and probably should – nominate it for Top 10 (i.e. “Impeccable”) consideration.
Votes can be cast up to seven days from the day and time of the original post.
Disclaimer: Votes cast from Florida may or may not be counted.
I like the Cure. But I found their cover to be, simply, boring. Too boring in fact to even bother listening to the last minute or so. The Shamen’s version is much more interesting, but only in relation to the Cure’s. Dubbsy – What happened to the Bobs?
Well you know I love The Bobs’ version. In fact it is hard to say whether my favorite creation of The Bobs is Purple Haze or Helter Skelter (with Psycho Killer running third). The Bobs’ Purple Haze was, in fact, very close to entering this competition but I felt that we had heard from them a few times in the last couple of months and I try to put some distance between repeating bands. But fear not, I have a strong feeling it will be The Bobs’ version of Purple Haze that soon challenges whichever band wins the present competition.
or Kronos Quartet??? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4dE65iTuG4Y
That’s great stuff. I will definitely add Kronos Quartet’s version of Purple Haze to the CMI database for future competition. As with The Bobs I love hearing a band cover one of the ultimate guitar songs sans that very instrument.
Okay, I don’t like either of these versions at all. I’ve been building my database of cover songs for years and in some cases, as with these two, I have not heard the songs in a long time and/or remember very little about them (maybe my database note by The Shamen’s version that simply reads “kind of annoying” should have been considered more heavily). The Shamen’s version is indeed kind of annoying and The Cure’s version is kind of boring and annoying resulting in a rather pathetic competition today. But I give you my word, this probably will not happen again, or at least no more than a few times a month!
Considering I demand accountability at every level (well, excepting the top, of course), I have summarily fired the entire CMI staff, which works out nicely as far as timing (those $5 Holiday bonuses add up, you know). Otherwise, all I can do is apologize and move on …
I think we can find it us to forgive. Might I suggest Bruce Springsteen’s cover of Love of the Common People? 😉
I kinda like The Cure’s muted, spooky version. As for the Kronos Quartet, I’ve seen them perform a few times and I have about 6 or 7 of their CDs, including the one with Purple Haze. I do think their version trumps ’em all.
