BSA: Question to the Readers

Blog Service Announcement

I’ve got a question for those who post comments regularly. Once you’ve posted a comment do you regularly go back to see if anyone has directly replied to it? I typically try to respond to every comment. But it recently occurred to me that I’ve never received a reply to any of my replies. Naturally my next thought was whether anyone was reading my replies and, if not, then was it worth my time and effort to reply? Understand, I’m not trying to shame readers into checking they’re posts. But I would like to get a better understanding of the reader’s tendencies and preferences. Thus, if you will then please let me know if you tend to return to posts after you’ve left a comment. I guess another point of interest would be, upon going to a post for the first time, do you usually read the comments and replies?

By the way, if would like to read replies to your comments but are not enthused over the idea of returning regularly to old posts to see if there is anything new then I’m pretty sure you can set the WordPress system to notify you when someone replies to one of your comments. Being the “administrator” I’m not sure how my menus differ from yours but, for what it is worth, I’ve got a menu called “Settings”; its submenu “Discussion” is where the e-mail settings are on my dashboard. If that is not the case for readers and you would like to know how to setup the e-mail preferences then let me know and I’ll find out.

Please reply below.

I usually return once to the previous day and maybe the day before that just to take a quick peak at any comments that have been made since I was there last. I don’t mind doing it manually.

I do check my blog regularly and if there’s a comment, I’ll respond immediately. If I make a comment on someone else’s blog and they do not respond, I do not take it personally nor do i care.

    I feel so ashamed

  4. Arnie Plotnick says:

I usually just read people’s posts, and then leave my own and never look back, which is probably bad, since I’m probably missing out on some witty repartee. And yet, I fear checking that box that says to notify me of new posts, because it could lead to reams and reams of semi-wanted e-mails. I should probably do what Doug does and check the previous day or two, manually, but admittedly, that’s a pain. I’d rather devote those precious 19 seconds to something more meaningful. Oy, such a dilemma.

    • RDubbs says:

Arnie the reality at present is that only a few people comment; many posts end up with 3 or fewer comments. So sadly you would not receive reams and reams of daily e-mails; it would be more like dribs and drabs over the course of a week. Someday that will all change (but probably not in our lifetime).

  5. Arnie Plotnick says:

Uh oh…how am I going to find out how everyone replies to this?

  6. Arnie Plotnick says:

Will I have to check in tomorrow, manually?

  7. Kerry Black says:

I’ve contributed quite a bit of witty, funny, interesting, and enlightening criticism and analysis over the last few months. It’s painful to consider that my efforts have been wasted. I think Arnie, in particular, should go back and carefully consider my body of work.

    • RDubbs says:

Kerry for every one of your admittedly splendid criticisms and analyses I have replied with indubitably spellbinding prose the likes of which blogs have not seen since Hemingway, Steinbeck and Fitzgerald last graced the electronic highways. Yet, alas, fists clenched and teeth gnashed, I gaze teary-eyed towards the heavens and wail, “When Will They Be Read?!!?”.

  8. bornunderabadsign says:

rdubb’s comments are usually so definitive, insightful, and profound that I find myself awestruck and bereft all but the most trifling ruminations

  9. The Bug says:

I always check back since my comments usually have nothing to do with anything and are so few and far between, this being one, but I will do better and not check back anymore, no wait, the other way around, . . .

  10. Arnie Plotnick says:

Look! I came back and checked!
