Written by Lee Hazlewood, This Town was first recorded by Nancy Sinatra in 1967. Old Blue Eyes was apparently intrigued by the tune and whatever Big Pops wants, Big Pops gets, releasing his own version in September 1967 on the album “Frank Sinatra and The World We Knew”. Although I’ve found no evidence that This Town was a “hit” by any conventional standards, apparently when Big Pops proclaims a song to be a hit, it’s a hit, as evidenced by its inclusion a year later on “Frank Sinatra’s Greatest Hits”.

Oh the disharmony! Much like Harlan County there are no neutrals here. Only one cover tune will live to play another day and it is your solemn responsibility to decide which one prevails. So tell me … Which Side Are You On?!!?

Love the horns in the Tubes version!
My gosh. What an annoying song! And Dubbs made me listen to it 4 times in a row!
I love this song, and man, can Nancy croon it or what? Love that sultry voice of hers. Nancy’s version ass-kicks her dad’s version, by far. As for the covers, I think the Tubes do a better version. Gnome’s version was too noisy. This is a song to be crooned.
I’ve listened to both covers about four or five times and cannot arrive at a decision. Maybe after a huge bowl of Chinese Chicken, Noodles & Vegetable Soup I’ll be more decisive. We shall see.
Well the Chinese Chicken Soup for lunch did not help but the nice thick and juicy, grilled bone-in pork chop and baked potato I consumed for dinner certainly brought some much needed clarity to my This Town dilemma.
I’ve always been partial to gnomes. So why stop now?
this is hands down Tubes in competition, agree with Arnie, its a crooning song but disgree that Nancy not as good as Daddy, both very good, actually like this song Cuspid, sorry. But Tubes take the song, embelish the crooningesque quality and add to it, Gnomes (who I normally like) try to bury it in noise. Anyone notice the Tijuana Brass tribute in the Tubes version near the end? Really nice arrangement.
