Prince:
Apparently Prince does not allow his songs to be played on YouTube anymore. I tell ya, ever since that guy became a symbol he’s become miserable to deal with! Anyway, if you’ve got an uncontrollable hankering to hear his version of Little Red Corvette then you can try this link:

Gear Daddies:
Loved these guys. Really, really loved them. And how did they repay me? By breaking up without as much as a word to me. And I really, really loved them 😦
Sarah Bettens:

Oh the disharmony! Much like Harlan County there are no neutrals here. It is your solemn responsibility to decide which cover song prevails. In other words … Which Side Are You On?!!?

I’m probably alone on this one. But I think this is basically a stupid song that only works if your Prince singing it. That said, I like Bettens’ version better because it reminds me a little bit of how Billy Bragg would sing it if he were 15 years younger and female.
I’m not a fan of Prince nor of this particular song. Yet I find both covers to be excellent. And they could not be much more different in style and feel. The Gear Daddies were having fun with this one; a lot of fun. And it’s contagious. I feel as if I’m at one of their shows ready to joyously bound about with a roomful of strangers! I am not familiar with Sarah Bettens but based on this clip I will seek out more of her work. Great rendition! She made the song her own and played it with the intensity of a wolf spider protecting her young.
So who to vote for? I’m still not sure. But I did love the Gear Daddies, really, really loved them.
Total agreement with Doug here. I think he’s an underrated guitar player, but other than that, I’d be fine if I never heard another note out of the little shrimp. I really can’t think of one song of his that I like. When Doves Cry and Raspberry Beret are two that, if they were on the radio, I would manage to make it through without smashing said radio. His other stuff… I think I’d smash the radio. I supposed I prefer the Gear Daddies version a bit better, maybe because the acoustics on the Sarah Bettens version are so crappy.
My father would have said it best, if he were alive today: “Prince, Schmince”.
I never cared for Prince, and it seems practically everyone I know considers him a first ballot Hall of Famer. I was trying to get psychologically prepared to suffer the slings and arrows of outrageous opprobrium for my disgraceful admission, when I read the words of my predecessors.
Maybe we should start a support group.
I didn’t really like the covers; the second one may be slightly better, but I own and esteem all three of Gear Daddies’ CDs, so I voted for them based on their other work.
