Oh the disharmony! Much like Harlan County there are no neutrals here. It is your solemn responsibility to decide which cover song prevails. In other words … Which Side Are You On?!!?

Three interesting covers. I like that they were all very different. I think I preferred Fall Out Boy’s version the most. But I voted for Petra Magoni. I liked her spirit and attitude as much as the rendition itself. I would have likes a bit more instrumentation other just a single upright bass. But I’m not going to fault her for that.

By the way, my favorite cover of this song is by Sting himself when he did a solo version on the Secret Policeman’s Other Ball record in 1981 accompanied by only his Fender electric guitar. I think this song only really sounds right when Sting sings it.

My inner avant-garde voted Magoni and Spinetti…although I could see myself pogoing like a drunk monkey to Fall Out Bar at some long forgotten hole in the wall…

  3. Arnold Plotnick says:

Wow… I kinda liked all three versions, different though each was from the original. Fall Out Boy pretty much do a good job at everything, so not surprised at their competent version. Petra Magoni is great. Never heard of her before, but her version is very unique and original. Definitely captivating. I went with Bauchklang in the end, because I was really drawn to the spooky hypnotic feel that they gave the song. Depending on your mood at the time you listen, any of these three could have been a winner.

During the vetting process, whereby, I listened to these as well as other potential covers a few times, as well as listening to these three a couple of times again this morning, all three of these contenders held my vote at least once. A lot of creativity and expertise inherent to each of these covers. Bauchklang, which means “belly sound” in Austrian, gets the nod for best band name and Magoni/Spinetti get extra credit for also covering “I Will Survive”, which just might be the most under-appreciated musical gem of our time. But, at least at this moment in time, I went with Fall Out Boy for attacking this project with verve and aplomb. They played with gusto, damn you bet!!!

  5. Kerry Black says:

I’m voting Magoni & Spinetti ’cause they sound least like the original. The Police (and I might add R.E.M from yesterday) epitomized boring mainstream rock radio and music videos of that era. Never owned anything by either band.
