Oh the disharmony! Much like Harlan County there are no neutrals here. It is your solemn responsibility to decide which cover song prevails. In other words … Which Side Are You On?!!?

I’ve always liked this song. But I’ve just realized that it’s simply too long… even the original. Would have been much better at about 2:45. At first I was enjoying Dashboard Confessional. But after about 2 and a half minutes the song was grating on me so much I had to just stop. Ingrid Michaelson was an improvement. I like how she created the vocal loops live in order to accompany herself. But I’m going with Pickin’ On Players because, despite no vocals, I think they somehow captured the spirit of the melody. Maybe this song was always meant to be an instrumental.
This is one of my favorite REM albums. My two favorite songs on the album are Try Not to Breathe and Nightswimming. I agree with Doug. Dashboard Confessional sounded good at first, mainly because they were playing a song I liked and recognized. Then it became tedious. Ingrid was very creative, but it was too stark for my liking. Pickin’ On Players, with the mandolin and violin and acoustic guitars really did a nice, chill version that highlights better than the other versions what a pretty song this is.
Ingrid Michaelson’s rendition was in many ways incredible. I would very much like to see her perform live. But while eminently creative her version was too starkly different from the original, which I am very fond of. The Pickin’s guys, as usual, produced a terrific, relaxing cut. Dashboard Confessional played the song most closely to the original, which in this case I liked. But Geez, it just goes to show how truly difficult it is to cover R.E.M.. Michael Stipe’s voice is so strong and unique. It just cannot be duplicated, which is where Dashboard Confessional understandably fell short. Still, I enjoyed their version the most. Vote goes to Dashboard Confessional.
I liked Ingrid Michelson’s the best but the instrumental cover was also very good. I think Rich’s comment on the absence of Stipe’s voice was very true. I have probably always underrated him and have had some moments recently where I have realized that. I know I am not as big of an REM fan as most of you.
EEEEWWW! Dashboard’s version is a bit of painful listening…Pickin’ On will do while waiting in the doctor’s office and finally Ingrid outstanding artistry but I would probably never listen again, regardless, the winner is Ingrid!
