Who knew that Hit Me With Your Rhythm Stick was such a popular song with children?

Oh the disharmony! Much like Harlan County there are no neutrals here. It is your solemn responsibility to decide which cover song prevails. In other words … Which Side Are You On?!!?

Oy gevalt. Three atrocious cover versions of a song that I could take or leave on a good day. It’s like voting for Cruz vs. Jindal vs. Santorum. I held my nose and picked the Nina Hagen version. The Jewish Monkeys’ version was amusing for about 20 seconds. A full seven minutes was painful. The Kurt Gober Band were horrible. Sigh… cover me not impressed.
This has basically always been a stupid song; more of a novelty than anything else. I usually like Nina Hagen. But she’s a little too much over the top with this one. I’m going with the Jewish Monkeys and their klezmer version for proving that a little Yiddish can improve almost any song. And by the way, I think the Kurt Gober Band should be arrested for child abuse.
Wow such hatred for one of Dury seminal works. The Jewish Monkeys’ version would have been great if edited down by a half. In their defense, it was from a live show where bands often extend songs that the audience is getting into. While I the Kurt Gober duo could have run a very successful child care center – well at least until the authorities were alerted – their cover left much to be desired. That leaves me with Nina Hagen’s version, which I suspect Ian Dury would have approved of.
I want the Jewish Monkeys for my next wedding! regardless, I voted for Nina
