Oh the disharmony! Much like Harlan County there are no neutrals here. It is your solemn responsibility to decide which cover song prevails. In other words … Which Side Are You On?!!?
Disclaimer: Votes cast from Florida may or may not be counted.
When I was a kid I loved this song. For me, the first 30 seconds is the quintessential definition of power-pop at its commercial best. I loved all three of these covers, any one of which is vote-worthy. Since I gotta pick one I’ll go with Matthew Sweet & Susanna Hoffs because the boy/girl duel vocals is a nice twist that fits this song well. Perhaps I should also note that the idea of Susanna Hoffs singing “Let’s go all the way” makes me a bit jealous of Matthew Sweet.
Ha. Cuspid and I see totally eye to eye on this one. I had this song on a 45 as a kid, and I loved it. The opening is definitely one of the most kick-ass starts of any song. My college roommate was very into this song, as well. I liked the Fastbacks’ version the best. They really rock the house. No complaints about the other versions, though. Anabot is so charming, and the vocal self-harmonizing is lovely. Matthew Sweet and Susanna Hoffs did a great version as well. It was close. Yes, Susanna Hoffs was quite the hottie. Almost enough to make me switch teams.
How could one love a song that inevitably get’s you so hot and bothered? A paradox for another day I suppose.
Yes, all three of these versions are excellent. It’s almost ridiculous to have to choose one (see Woody Allan relative to the Academy Awards). Yet, as Captains of the Blog this is our burden and so choose we must!
I love Anabot. You know, like a daughter (granddaughter?). And I really wanted to give her my vote. As I’ve said in the past, I love when kick-ass tunes are covered well acoustically. Anabot’s rendition, no doubt, is captivating and her voice is fantastic. But this song just cries out for an electric guitar. Musically I like what the Fastbacks threw down the most. And, of course, Matthew Sweet & Susanna Hoffs predictably knocked out a great cover.
My first vote would be for Anabot on vocals with the Fastbacks laying down the music. (Yes, this will not be the first time I’ve been favorably compared to the venerable Reuben Kincaid.). But, alas, as is usually the case the specific tickets offered on the ballot do not agree with my preferences. Enough!!! I reluctantly voted for the Fastbacks. Anabot forgive me …
Um, just being featured among the greats is an honor in and of itself. Thanks again for the feature, CMI!
Wow, Anabot replies! How cool! Richie posts videos of you all the time on here. He thinks you’re terrific, and so do I. Keep doing what you’re doing. It’s wonderful to watch and hear.
Anabot is way-cool.
Big sound, big vocals, to go with the big hair era…oh, ladies of the 80’s where are you today???
