Oh the disharmony! Much like Harlan County there are no neutrals here. It is your solemn responsibility to decide which cover song prevails. In other words … Which Side Are You On?!!?
Disclaimer: Votes cast from Florida may or may not be counted.
Since I don’t know anything about this song or about the band who sang it originally I will defer to Ras Arnold to tell me how I should feel about these covers.
Whoa! Cuspid relinquishes his unfair geographical advantage! I’m glad you admit your rudimentary knowledge of the Beatles pales in comparison to my true understanding of the lads. Fortunately for the cover bands, the Beatles set a very low bar with their shitty rendition, so pretty much any schmuck off the street with a ukelele or a kazoo could do a better version. However, I’ll keep my focus on the three covers presented here today. Fionn Reagan strips it down to just acoustic and voice. Normally that can work pretty well, but sadly, his version just exposes and emphasizes the stupid lyrics and amateurish construction of the original. Plus, I don’t like his voice, although in a head to head competition with John or Paul, Fionn’s voice would win by a landslide. Ultrasound play their instruments much, much better than the Beatles ever could, but I have to admit that the vocals here didn’t quite cut it. They were a notch below Ringo (who clearly had the best voice of all of the Beatles), but this version was nearly as boring as the original. I’m giving it to The Wedding Present. Their body of work, we should note, rivals the Beatles in scope and talent. In fact, the Wedding Present continued to make music well into the late ’90s and early 2000’s, something the gutless Beatles refused to do. The Wedding Present’s raucous version here, with cool guitar feedback (something Lennon knew nothing about) and nice female harmonizing (something the Beatles never had, even though they had Yoko at their disposal; I mean, she had a beautiful voice and could have provided gorgeous harmony to such horribly lacking songs like Yesterday or Something) gets my vote.
As we can clearly see, Ras Arnold indeed possesses more wisdom and insight in just his fingertips dancing across his keyboard than most of us could possibly ever attain. A giant walks among us.
I give this one to Fionn. And I give an honorable mention to the Wedding Present for their version which sounded like a cut from that famous album that was never released by the Association: “The Association Punks Out”
Ultrasound barely edges The Wedding Present.
