Very nice rendition by Neil, Joni Mitchell and The Band. I’ve always wondered why Neil never recorded with Joni. They’re old buddies and her voice works well with his signature falsetto.

Oh the disharmony! Much like Harlan County there are no neutrals here. It is your solemn responsibility to decide which cover song prevails. In other words … Which Side Are You On?!!?

  1. Cuspid says:

Three excellent versions. As much as I like Patti Smith, I had never heard her version, which I found to be incredibly good. Would it be sacrilege to admit that I prefer her version to the original? Yikes!

  2. RDubbs says:

Thought sure I’d vote for my man, Nick, but Eddie Vedder’s emotional ending did it for me.

  3. Pete Black says:

Brooding, melancholy ballad. You think Nick Cave can do a take? They start great and I love the Bad Seeds, the organ helps set the tone but a bit tame and glossy compared to the version I know they could deliver. I think Nick Cave’s shamanistic powers could send Jim Morrison’s stinky leather pants into the cheap seats. But, Patti Smith won me over with her earnest version that may have been my favorite vocal by her. Impressive. The fidelity on the Eddie Vedder version ruined it from consideration for me.
