THE CLASH of Cover Tunes: Alex Chilton vs. Marcia Hines vs. Johnny Winter

I Shouted Out, “Who Ate The Broccoli?”, When After All, It Was You And Me…
I read it in the Sunday papers …
A British woman has a special craving for household sponges – and eats as many as 20 a day. Emma Thompson has a condition called pica, in which people crave nonfood items to eat. “Some people go out for a steak, I would rather go out for a sponge”, says Thompson. “A couple of years ago, I was just washing the dishes and I seen the sponges with the scouring pads and I just thought it’d be quite interesting to try one of them. Ever since that I’ve been addicted to them.” Thompson likes to dip the sponges in dishwasher liquid before downing them. Thus far she has shown no ill effects.

Oh the disharmony! Much like Harlan County there are no neutrals here. It is your solemn responsibility to decide which cover song prevails. In other words … Which Side Are You On?!!?
Great, classic song – one of the first that any kid learning rock guitar tried to play. Chilton’s version sounds like a half-hearted demo. He capable of a lot better. Marcia Hines does a solid R&B rendition with great vocals. But Johnny Winter takes this one with both performance and spirit. Had to listen to it twice.
Winter had my vote but dragged the song out a bit too long. I agree with Doug, Chilton was capable of much better than what he gave and yet, he gave just enough …
I’m a fan of Big Star, and thus expected to vote for Alex Chilton, but I was underwhelmed by his version.
I never heard of Marcia Hines, but welcomed her energy and verve, and thought she had surpassed Chilton.
I ultimately voted for Johnny Winter. I’m usually not big on guitar-heavy meanderings, but watching him perform on video made for a more enjoyable experience than merely listening.
Rock On Johhny! Crank that amp to 11! ….. just really jealous i could never quite get my hair to look like the drummers😔
Wow! Johnny! That’s probably the healthiest and most vital I have seen him. One of Keef’s greatest guitar riffs and a favorite song of mine since I was twelve. I liked Chilton’s understated version. He believes Ringo when he says “you don’t have to shout or leap about”. I didn’t know Marcia but apparently she became a big star for a bit in Australia after doing musicals, dance music and mostly covers.
When I look at Johnny’s second guitarist and bassist I can’t help but see Mark Wahlberg and John C Reilly in Boogie Nights. Those clothes take me back.
