Broc 3 - Cover Me Impressed

Everybody’s Dressin’ Funny … Cover Me Impressed!

“If you remove the English Army tomorrow and hoist the green flag over Dublin Castle., unless you set about the organization of the Socialist Republic your efforts will be in vain. England will still rule you. She would rule you through her capitalists, through her landlords, through her financiers, through the whole array of commercial and individualist institutions she has planted in this country and watered with the tears of our mothers and the blood of our martyrs.

Black 47:

A fine tribute to one of my all-time heroes.

THE CLASH of Cover Tunes

Charlie and The Bhoys vs. Lost Tribe of Donegal
Charlie and the Bhoys:

Lost Tribe of Donegal:

Oh the disharmony! Much like Harlan County there are no neutrals here. It is your solemn responsibility to decide which cover song prevails. In other words … Which Side Are You On?!!?

  1. Cuspid says:

Same words. Same melodies. But different songs, really. I kinda preferred the acoustic and sparse rendition of Lost Tribe of Donegal. But I could have just as easily gone with Charlie and the Bhoys.

Ireland theme today, Scotland theme yesterday. Is Wales in store for tomorrow?

  2. Kerry Black says:

I discovered this song in the early nineties when Black 47’s debut CD was sent to me by a former college roommate. I think this was probably my favorite track back in the day; I admit I haven’t played it in quite some time.

I was way into Irish music in the nineties when I lived in the San Francisco area. Luckily for me, at that time the annual Irish music festivals featured many of the top performers in the genre, so I was able to watch many of my heroes perform. On one occasion I noticed the guy standing in front of me in the beer line was Larry Kirwan, so I exchanged a few words with him.

I listened to each version twice. At first I was prepared to vote for the stripped down acoustic version. But after a second listening I went the other way.

  3. Pete Black says:

Damn! When you remove all the bombastic overkill of Larry Kirwan’s arrangements and vocals( which would make even Bono blush) it reveals what a great song this is. Both versions to my ears are superior to Black 47’s but The Lost Tribe’s was a bit too spare. I vote Charlie and The Bhoys for the Goldilocks version.

  4. RDubbs says:

I love Black 47’s haunting yet powerful version of this song. In fact it is one my all-time favorite tunes. Larry Kirwan is prone to go over the top in songs but for James Connolly’s bigger than life story it suits me just fine. The Lost Tribe of Donegal’s cover was creative but it got to be a bit redundant and I was not crazy about the vocals. So Charlie and The Bboys got my vote.

  5. Arnold Plotnick says:

    I didn’t listen. I didn’t vote. I just lurked today.
