Tune du Jour: “I Feel Fine” – The Beatles
THE CLASH of Cover Tunes: Akim, Sam Clayton & Les Guitares vs. Parasites vs. The Ventures
I read it in the Sunday papers …
A Turkish man was kicked off a TV dating show after admitting on the air that he’d murdered his first wife during a jealous rage and “accidentally” killed his next lover “when I swung an ax.” Sefer Calinak, 62, cheerfully admitted his violent history on The Luck of the Draw, saying he’d served 14 years in jail for the crimes. Calinak was asked to leave the show by the horrified host, but later told a newspaper that he hadn’t given up his search for love. “I have changed,” he said. “The woman who will marry me should not be afraid that I would kill her.”

Oh the disharmony! Much like Harlan County there are no neutrals here. It is your solemn responsibility to decide which cover song prevails. In other words … Which Side Are You On?!!?
I’m trying to think of any song with multiple language versions that sounded best in French. I suppose there might be somewhere. But Akim sure ain’t it. Parasites live up to their name. Sounds like they used the Beatles’ backing track and then added their vocals on top. So although the Ventures didn’t tremendously impress me, they’re the best in a weak field of three.
Strong showing by The Ventures as expected, but they lost points for lack of vocals. Parasites for the win.
I went with the Parasites and I’m not afraid to say it. In fact, I telling all the world!
Even though I think the vocals are so important to what makes the original so delightful. Is it okay for a semi masculine man to use the word delightful? It’s the first word that came to mind, and yet I..I..picked The Ventures. The first two were underwhelming. It sounded better even without vocals.
