Oh the disharmony! Much like Harlan County there are no neutrals here. It is your solemn responsibility to decide which cover song prevails. In other words … Which Side Are You On?!!?
I love the Who, and I love a lot of the early “pre-Tommy” Who. But this is not one of my favorites from that period. It’s not bad. But despite being a single, I find it to be unremarkable.
Chico’s jazzy instrumental was interesting, but ultimately not too compelling.
Matthew Sweet & Susanna Hoffs are cover masters. I have all 3 of their “Under the Covers” albums, and they’re all excellent. That said, this one in particular is good, but not remarkable.
I did not know who the Lolas were before now. But they totally nailed this song. I really liked the guitar tone, which I think is even better than in the original. And that bridge at 1:52, though brief, is absolutely glorious.
Yo, it’s Arnie. Hey… sorry I can’t participate in voting for the next two weeks or so. I’m in Amsterdam and my apartment doesn’t have an Internet connection just yet. Trying to get YouTube videos to pop up on my phone is impossible. It takes forever. It’s frustrating because I like starting my day with CMI.
Mildly interesting to hear Chico Hamilton’s instrumental jazz version. But now that I’ve heard it, I have no desire to repeat the experience.
Don’t know who The Lolas are, but that was very good. Sweet vocals backed by some muscular drumming works for me; I might have to look into getting that Who tribute disc.
Nice version by Matthew Sweet & Susanna Hoffs. I like the male/female vocal harmonies, but it wasn’t enough to unseat The Lolas.
Chico Hamilton was interesting but let’s face it, the guy never had a chance. The Lolas did a fine job of emulating the original. And they have a cool name. They very nearly got my vote. But I went with MS & SH because they personalized the song a bit. And I liked the male / female vocals.
I liked all three but voted for Matthew Sweet and Susanna Hoffs. Like Zaner, I have their 3 volumes of Under The Covers. I put all three on a playlist and hit random. Their song choices are strong.
