Tune du Jour: “God Save the Queen” – Sex Pistols
THE CLASH of Cover Tunes: Anthrax vs. Michael Fagan vs. The Vile

Everybody’s Dressin’ Funny … Cover Me Impressed!

Read it in the Sunday papers …
A South Korean inventor who was fed up with drinking alone has created a robot companion that can knock back shots with him all night long. Eunchan Park began developing Robot Drinky after he spent Christmas 2012 drinking rice wine by himself. “I had no girlfriend at that time,” he said. “Drinking alone was definitely terrible.” Drinky is designed to combat that sense of solitude: It can clink glasses in a toast and nods its head as its inebriated human buddy rants away. Drinky, though, never gets drunk – the booze flows straight from its mouth down a tube and into a mason jar.

As a Neil Young fanatic I just have to say I am appalled that he chose to cover this vile song. To further irritate his rendition is absolutely abysmal!

Oh the disharmony! Much like Harlan County there are no neutrals here. It is your solemn responsibility to decide which cover song prevails. In other words … Which Side Are You On?!!?
Legendary song. Seems very mild now. But as we all know, it was anything but mild back in ’77/’78.
Can’t really take Michael Fagan’s version very seriously. So this is really a 2-man contest.
I have heard Anthrax do a great job covering Joe Jackson’s Got the Time. Therefore, I was not too surprised to see them covering this one as well. I think they do a pretty admirable job. I also think Vile does a pretty admirable job. But they have one big advantage over Anthrax – a British accent, which really help with a song such as this. So for lack of any other significant distinguisher, I’m going with Vile.
The Vile “nailed it” I guess, but I really liked Fagan’s jazzy new wave version that transformed this anthem to a reading beat poetry…
I like all three covers. While I respect Fagan’s creativity I want to hear this song fast and angry. Tough call between Anthrax and The Vile. I gave it to Anthrax by a nose.
Anthrax version was better than I expected, but that may be due to my metal skepticism.
Michael Fagan gets points for changing it and for making the lyrics easy to understand, but this song should be rocked.
The Vile is a great band name, and they get the vote for delivering a rocking version with reasonably understandable lyrics.
I’ll take The Vile over the Gary Numan fronting The Throbbing Gristle version and a surprisingly solid Anthrax take.
