Oh the disharmony! Much like Harlan County there are no neutrals here. It is your solemn responsibility to decide which cover song prevails. In other words … Which Side Are You On?!!?
Shoot, I’m not that crazy about any of these versions, even though I generally do like the artists here. So in a battle of underwhelming performances I’m going with Al Green because of the trumpets, which I do like.
I loved the backing track by Dread Zeppelin, especially the bass but the awful vocal killed it for me. Al Green is always respectable but this was not one of this better moments. I voted for Cibo Matto. I like the modern lounge atmosphere they evoke. And it was over in 1:59.
I’ve never been an Al Green fan. When his songs came on radio, I wouldn’t change the station, but I never bought his stuff. He does his usual bit here.
I liked the Dread Zeppelin version, especially the bass.
Vote goes to Cibo Matto, I wouldn’t have known The Beastie Boys were involved if they hadn’t been credited.
I really liked Cibo Matto’s version. As y’all know, I’m sort of a sucker for sultry, whispery female vocals. Didn’t like Dread Zeppelin’s version, but I agree with Kerry, the bass lines are killer. I didn’t really like the AlGreenification of the song, but if anyone can AlGreenify a song, it’s, um, Al Green. But Cibo Matto gets this one for me.
