Paul McCartney:

THE CLASH of Cover Tunes

Big Fish Ensemble vs. The Judybats

Big Fish Ensemble:

The Judybats:

Oh the disharmony! Much like Harlan County there are no neutrals here. It is your solemn responsibility to decide which cover song prevails. In other words … Which Side Are You On?!!?

So What’s Been Spinning on R Dubbs’ Stereo Lately …
Just for You, Here’s a Dubbs Song!

“Shivers” – Rowland S Howard:

Beautifully haunting song by Australian underground legend, Rowland S. Howard. Howard wrote Shivers when he was only 16. It later became the only single off of The Birthday Party‘s debut album, Door, Door. Shivers later appeared in an Australian independently released film, Dogs In Space, which is centered around a fictitious punk band’s demise amid abundant drug use and dysfunctional lifestyles. Shivers is a classic post-punk ballad and one of Australia’s most enduring cult hits.

  1. Cuspid says:

I never thought I would find myself thinking that a Big Fish Ensemble cover would be boring. But I guess I can’t say that anymore. It’s not bad. It’s just boring; a straight rendering of the original. The Judybats also play it pretty straight, though not as much. So by default they get my vote.

  2. Arnold Plotnick says:

I don’t really like the original. I don’t like either cover versions. I’m being difficult. I know. Sorry.

  3. RDubbs says:

I’m with you on this one, Arnie, I don’t much like this song either. I’m not even sure it is blog-worthy. If I had more say-so around here it would have never seen the light of day, whatever that means.

I voted for Big Fish Ensemble because I was once friendly with some of its members, proving once again the incalculable value of friendship with one, RDubbs.
